Andreu Balius, type designer and lecturer on Eina's Bachelor's Degree in Design, continues to pursue a wide range of research and knowledge-sharing activities that highlight the interdisciplinary nature of graphic design and its connections with culture, science and the performing arts.
Super-Veloz: rediscovering typographic heritage
Balius is co-author, alongside Alex Trochut, of Super-Veloz: Joan Trochut’s Modular Modernism and the Dream of Typographic Abundance in Spain, 1930–1955, published by Letterform Archive.
The book explores the history of Super-Veloz, an innovative modular typographic system created by Joan Trochut in the 1940s. To mark its publication, Letterform Archive has published an interview with the authors discussing the enduring relevance of this legacy and its influence on contemporary design.
Typography applied to optometry
In the scientific field, Balius is a co-author of the article Desarrollo de tipografías a partir de optotipos clásicos y nuevos (Development of typefaces based on classic and new optotypes), published in Óptica Pura y Aplicada, the journal of the Spanish Optical Society (SEDOPTICA).
The research explores the development of digital typefaces based on optotypes used in visual acuity tests, highlighting the potential applications of type design in eye care and visual health.
50 years of graphic communication at Teatre Lliure
On 24 October, Balius presented a paper entitled La identitat gràfica del Teatre Lliure (The Graphic Identity of Teatre Lliure) at Barcelona's Palau Robert, as part of the international symposium marking the institution's 50th anniversary, organised by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Institut del Teatre.
The research examines the evolution of Teatre Lliure's graphic communication over five decades and the role of design in shaping its visual identity. The findings will be presented in a forthcoming article.
These three initiatives demonstrate the capacity of graphic design to preserve cultural heritage, generate knowledge and establish connections with other disciplines.
