The EINA Master's in Advanced Typography and Page Design provides advanced teaching for the undertaking of practical, professional or research projects in the field of typography.

The Master’s covers the subjects that provide students with the in-depth study of typographic design, such as calligraphy and lettering, digital typeface design and the development of the typographic family, readings and history of typography, and the development of the digital alphabet and expanded alphabets.

In addition, the Master’s provides an immersion in page design and editing through the subjects of book design and history, typographic uses, design of publications with fixed and variable structures, editing processes, design and online editing.

The Master’s is designed for anyone seeking to specialise in page design based on an in-depth knowledge of typography and its use. It is aimed at communication students and professionals and at anyone who can accredit professional practice in this field.

The Master’s course is comprised of two postgraduate diplomas, which can be studied independently:

Admission

To register for this course, candidates have to pass a selection process and meet the academic and administrative requirements.

To do this, you will need a university identification number (NIU/NIA) and a password. If you are not yet an EINA student, you will have to complete a registration application.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN TYPOGRAPHIC DESIGN

MODULE 1 – CALLIGRAPHY AND LETTERING

10 ECTS CREDITS

Calligraphy (40 hours)
Practice and theory aimed at getting to know the different calligraphy styles that have influenced subsequent typographical forms. Study of the tools, supports and inks. Study of the ductus and variants of each style.

Lettering (40 hours)
Letter drawing practice based on a central calligraphy axis, although especially for contour. Manual and digital vectorial drawing. Practice with single letters, monograms, logotypes, headings and alphabet principles.

MODULE 2 – TYPOGRAPHY DESIGN

10 ECTS CREDITS

Digital typography design (40 hours)
Design of a digital alphabet with a limited number of characters.

Development of the typographic family (40 hours)
Development of the digital alphabet by weights and styles. Planning the typographic family.

MODULE 3 – WRITING AND HISTORY OF TYPOGRAPHY

10 ECTS CREDITS

Writing and history of typography (40 hours)
Theoretical studies of the origins of writing and the relationships with languages, families and evolution. Study of pre-typographic Latin writing and typography. Formal evolution of typography. Standards and repertoire of typographic alphabets up to the present day.

Expanded alphabets (40 hours)
Development of the digital alphabet beyond the basic initial letters that have allowed design to be determined. Study of special characters. Design approach for other writing close to Latin, especially Greek and Cyrillic. Typography design for screen.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PAGE DESIGN AND EDITING

MODULE 4 – APPLICATION AND TYPOGRAPHIC USES

10 ECTS CREDITS

Design and history of the book (40 hours)
Study of the parts of the book and their formal evolution. Study and practice on the design of the conventional reading book.

Typographic uses (24 hours)
Study of the different styles, fonts and creators of existing typographies. Study of examples of application in significant pieces of the history of publishing design. Analysis of typographic standards and uses. Orthotypography.

MODULE 5 – MODULAR AND VARIABLE PAGE DESIGN

10 ECTS CREDITS

Design of fixed-structure publications (40 hours)
Design of periodical-type publications where the page structure, modular system and typographical hierarchies are governed by changing contents that do not require a unique design.

Design of variable-structure publications (40 hours)
Design of magazine-type publications where the page structure and typographical hierarchies are governed by changing contents that require individual page planning. Graphic planning of the publication, photographic editing and art direction.

MODULE 6 – EDITING AND ONLINE DESIGN

10 ECTS CREDITS

Editing processes (40 hours)
Content flow planning for paper and digital processes.

Online design and editing (40 hours)
Design of publications on screen. Adaptation of designs on paper to online formats.

FINAL MASTER’S DEGREE PROJECT

10 ECTS CREDITS

Final Master’s Degree Project (20 hours)
Project based on writing, typography or editing where some theoretical contribution or proposal of a practical model is made after a prior needs study.
