Atacama: cross-cultural design workshop

The Universidad del Desarrollo de Chile (UDD) and EINA will hold a cross-cultural design workshop in October on branded clothing waste found in the Atacama Desert.

This workshop, with the participation of the Art Direction students of the UDD Bachelor of Design and the 4th year students of the Bachelor of Design, in the field of Product, has as its main purpose the development and dissemination of projects that communicate global issues with an impact on local communities and specific to the cultures involved, without distorting a common and articulated goal.

The clothes accumulated in Alto Hospicio, in the north of Chile, are manufactured in China or Bangladesh and bought in Berlin or Los Angeles. At least 39,000 tons of never sold or used clothes end up as exposed rubbish on the surface. Hidden beneath the desert sand are more garments covered up, in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid toxic fires, by the chemicals and synthetic fabrics that make up the garments.
