Emboscada #3: Julia Spínola

Ambush #3: Julia Spínola

Conceived by artist Julia Spínola, this collective and site-specific intervention stems from a material research process: between sculpture, memory and graphic processes (serigraphy as a specific method, although solely acting as a particular outlet). The collaboration with the 3rd year students of the EINA Design Degree, within the framework of the module Laboratories of Creation I, takes three months, and coincides with various stages of the construction and rehabilitation processes of the building that is now EINA Bosc.

The group works to construct/reconstruct images based off elements found in various spaces of the building and its surroundings: ropes, leaves, nails, cables, branches, rubble, pieces of walls, bolts, nuts or mineral residues. The compositions unfold in the space as three-dimensional drawings or ephemeral assemblages, after which they are scanned and transferred to the two-dimensional format and the dimensions of the serigraphic photolithographs usually used in the workshop of EINA. With the help of Esther Aguilà, the then-engraving workshop teacher, the group transfer the 36 images directly onto the walls of the building through direct serigraphy. The result is both an act of inscription and transfer, as well as an architectural tattooing and a recording of an interaction with the environment.

The execution of Ambush #3 with Julia Spínola does not only serve to accompany and mark the temporality of an architecture in the process of ruin and construction, erosion and bandaging, researching its traces at the material and symbolic levels. It is also a transfer process between EINA Barra de Ferro, which contained the serigraphic workshops until then; EINA Sentmenat, where some of the work sessions took place; and the imminent space of EINA Bosc, where the action materialised. Based on an action of craftsmanship and transference, Ambush #3 allies itself with the provisional nature of construction to attain the possible permanence of a collective imaginary, the collective production of an imprint and its eventual rendition to the ecosystem.

The group was formed by Julia Spínola together with the students Gemma Bistrussu, Alexia Cervera, Alba Espuny, Sofía Fernández, Neo Gamiz, Lucía González, María Gutiérrez, Tono Magrans, Mar Martinell, Julia Pere, Álvaro Pérez, Bhavna Ruberte, Marrily Ruíz, April Solsona and Alba Tomàs.
