Irene Bas

Irene Bas

She graduated in Interior Architecture from ETSAM (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid) in 2007 and in Lighting Design from UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) in 2010. Since then, she has worked as an interior designer and lighting designer and is a member of APDI (Professional Association of Lighting Designers).

Teaching / Research

She complements her professional practice with teaching, currently on the Master’s Degree in Lighting Design at UPC, and previously at IED Madrid (on the Master’s in Children’s Design for Space and Product) and at Elisava (on the Postgraduate Programme in Architectural Lighting, where she also created the iluminActions workshop together with Lupercales to carry out the lighting design for the Eme-3 Festival at Fabra i Coats).

She has delivered lectures and workshops with the collective “Lupercales. Lighting Tactics”, focusing on the dissemination of light culture and the approach to urban, heritage and social lighting.

Through this tactical methodology and educational project, she has taught a wide range of workshops and masterclasses at ETSAM, UPC, the Convent de Sant Agustí and the Städelschule of Architecture in Frankfurt, as well as within festival contexts such as LlumBCN, RGB Rome, Septembeam in Olomouc, Light Edu in Timișoara and Enlighten Europe in Berlin.

Professional activity

She has extensive experience as a designer and coordinator across multiple project typologies and sectors: from design studios such as BMLD (Architectural Lighting Design Studio) or Intervento (museum and heritage lighting), to lighting manufacturers such as Viabizzuno and technical lighting distribution companies such as Difusiona.

In 2023, she joined Jordi Moya’s studio (ILM BCN) to develop lighting projects for museums, exhibitions, architecture and heritage.

In 2013, she co-founded the collective “Lupercales, Lighting Tactics” together with other lighting designers: an ongoing project of research and experimentation in urban lighting with a social and gender-based approach, fostering awareness of public space, heritage and citizens, through workshops and demonstrative installations in an open, participatory process.

She has also collaborated with other design practices and ran her own independent studio between 2011 and 2015, working as a designer and consultant on interior design and lighting projects for private clients, architects and property developers, including AGi Architects and Medgroup.
