Tactile Drawing. Drawing Body to Body with the Territory

As part of the SIT-PLU (Situated Creative Practices for the Pluriverse) project, funded by the Creative Europe programme, NEBULA Laboratory researchers Anna Pujadas and Mar Saiz developed the Tactile Drawing laboratory during December 2025 and January 2026. The laboratory explored drawing as a bodily, relational and shared practice through touch, physical contact and the caressage methodology, developed by artist Mar Saiz, to investigate alternative ways of perceiving and understanding the world beyond sight.

The initiative was based on an understanding of drawing that places proximity, listening and care at its centre. Through shared gestures and attentive presence, participants explored how contact between bodies, materials and environments can become a form of knowledge. Drawing was approached as a collective process in which differences in experiences, sensitivities and perspectives became opportunities to establish connections and construct shared meanings.

One of the laboratory's central practices was caressage, a body-to-body drawing methodology developed by artist Mar Saiz, with precedents in frottage. This practice explores the transfer of marks through direct bodily contact between the artist and the subject being drawn. Rather than relying exclusively on visual observation, the process is activated through touch, pressure, movement and proximity, allowing textures, temperatures, rhythms and resistance to become graphic information.

Through these explorations, Tactile Drawing proposed a way of learning and creating based on interdependence, sensitivity and mutual responsibility. The laboratory opened up a space for experimentation in which drawing became a way of approaching others and the territory through care, recognising the body and physical contact as sources of knowledge and as possibilities for imagining alternative forms of relating.
