José Miguel Abarca

PhD in Design, Manufacturing and Management of Industrial Projects by Polytechnic University of Valencia. He studied the last year of specialization in industrial design at the Polytechnic of Milan, obtaining the title of Industrial Design Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Valencia in the year 2000. Master's Degree in Design Engineering and postgraduate in Industrial Design from the same university.


He teaches Household appliance design subject in EINA

Since 2008 he teaches at the Polytechnic University of Valencia as associate professor assigned to the department of drawing, in subjects of degree, master studies and EPS (European project semester).

Some of these subjects are: Design for Leisure and Habitat, Advanced Development of Products for Leisure and Habitat, Specific Production Technologies, Strategic Design, Design Workshop I and II and Research and Development of New Products

Professional activity

He began his professional career in 2001, working in differents Italian design and architecture studios developing projects related to lighting and furniture for companies such as 3M, Iguzzini or Zumtobel among others.

Later in Barcelona he worked on product design projects for medicine and physiotherapy companies as a senior designer, and working as an engineer in the multinational company Roca Sanitario. Back in Valencia years later, become part of the multinational Royo Group as a Design Manager. In 2006 he founded with Miguel Abarca the firm "Discoh - DISeño COHerente" fter having worked together in other studios.,

Specialized in product design services, technical development, prototyping and production management, Discoh conducts its activity in the fiels of furniture, electronics, structural packaging, lighting, industrial equipment, childcare or household equipment, among others.

He has participated in relevant international exhibitions all over the world,, exhibiting in United statres, Italy Germany and Spain Europe, obtaining several mentions and awards.

Since 2008, he combines his work as a designer with teaching in the Polytechnic University of Valencia.


He has written articles for El Sector and Area-Play magazine and has published design projects in specialized magazines and books such as Experimenta, Progettare, D[x]I, Project Contract or Md Interior Design Magazine.
