Teresa Mulet, Enric Mas, El Deletrista and Xano Armenter approach the world of image and graphic creation through the exploration of different techniques such as risography, printing and painting, crossing the digital and analogue dimensions.
Professor: Teresa Mulet
Dates: 25, 26, 28 and 29 de July
Scheduled time: from 3 pm to 8 pm
Duration: 20h
A large part of 'seeing' depends on our habits and conventions. From an experience of transiting, a natural-political-personal-objectual journey is proposed. A drift to encounter the unexpected. The play between memory and oblivion in a critical itinerary.
The meaning of images is not attached to them, but has become transmissible and increasingly accessible, available to manipulation, transformation, ambivalence and infinite interpretations.
How can the use of risographic techniques modify and alter the meaning of what we see, how does a risographic machine look, how does the reproducibility of the image multiply possible meanings?
The RISOgraphic technique is a mechanical-digital printing system widely used by the artistic and desktop publishing community because of its plastic qualities. Printing with RISO requires a willingness to embrace "the nature of the beast" rather than forcing it to act like other techniques.
It, the RISO, is a particular machine, which cannot be controlled, and it does not admit exactitudes, that is why, with it, it is necessary to "embrace the ERROR" and to find its POSSIBILITIES with patience.
By means of a non-linear reading exercise (performative), we built a mural, a simple design system with the same format, with movable pages.
The mural shows encounters and dis-encounters, authorship is diluted, everything is mixed, limits are confused, images are repeated, reiterating the one observed by all. Making a common map of errors towards other imaginaries. A device to encourage dialogue.
Programme
Monday 25.07 - Cartography of the error, seated walking
Possible theories of error, approach of a visual essay.
The exercise invites us to place ourselves from other perspectives without expectations. Accepting "the error" is the action that does not follow what is "right", "correct" and "true".
It is to review the imaginaries that have controlled us, from a random route, trying to rehearse a history-fiction of errors (calculation error, unexpected error, registration error, conceptual error, systematic error, cartographic error, genetic error, random error, historical error, information error, conceptual error, spelling error, error of meaning, virus error.... input error, typo).
Tuesday 26.07 - Embracing error
Theory and practice of the risographic technique.
Getting to know the risographic technique ('technical errors') will allow us to review and reinforce concepts between ethics and aesthetics. To do so, we will carry out practical exercises (superimposing, separating colours, transparencies, wefts, noises, large, scales, perspectives, out of register, displacement...).
Thursday 28.07 - Dissecting the gaze
Selection of visual essays production - printing
From a free exercise and with reduced times, we will let the images select us, those that are not within our programme, our characters, our usual assumptions, our discourses in which we have acquired solvency.
in which we have acquired solvency. Not to be afraid of failure. Accept mistakes.
Friday 29.07 - Becoming a single body
Printing, assembly, exhibition
On the last day of the workshop we will build a collective mural using a simple design system, based on the repetition of the same format, with movable pages. The exhibition will be displayed in the EINA Bosc space.
Professor: Enric Mas
Dates: 28, 26 and 27 de July
Scheduled time: from 10 am to 2 pm
Duration: 12h
In this course you will learn how to build a workshop with minimum infrastructures for the production and printing of screen printing matrices. Both manual techniques and photomechanical procedures will be worked on, and participants will be guided through the process to plan the setting up of a workshop suited to their possibilities and needs.
Screen printing is a versatile technique with a multitude of practical applications with which surprisingly professional results can be obtained with simple or even precarious infrastructures, but at the same time it is a procedure that has evolved quite a lot technologically and for which there are a multitude of mechanised devices and really specific materials. Determining the characteristics and sizing our equipment according to our needs will depend not only on our economic and space capacity but also on our knowledge of the technique and how it suits the final product we wish to obtain.
During the workshop we will make screens and make use of stencils obtained by mechanised systems, we will insolate with a professional insolator and also with sunlight, we will use specific materials and tools and we will compare them with those that we will make ourselves, always taking into account the knowledge of the principles that underlie the technique.
Programme
Monday 25.07 from 10 am to 2 pm
Introduction and presentation of the different procedures we will use. Organisation and management of the infrastructure necessary for the workshop.
Tuesday 26.07 from 10 am to 2 pm
Construction of different devices and tools. First tests.
Wednesday from 10 am to 2 pm
Workshop with fungible materials
Professor: Adrián Pérez (El Deletrista)
Dates: 28 and 29 July
Horari previst: from 10 am to 2 pm
Dur: 8h
The Brush Lettering course offers an intensive introduction to the traditional techniques of calligraphy and the construction of lettering through drawing and the use of the lettering brush. During the course, examples of brush lettering will be reviewed and the importance of brush lettering in commercial and brand building will be analysed.
Programa
Thursday 28.07 from 10 am to 2 pm - First strokes in block letters
Introduction to the basic strokes and handling of the lettering brush (curing, correct paint load, posture, etc.), followed by a template to make a block lettering alphabet, considered the basic alphabet for any traditional lettering composition.
Friday 29.07 from 10 am to 2 pm - First strokes in "casual" alphabet.
On the second day we will continue warming up with the movements and turns of the wrist and the position of the basic strokes, this time focusing on the second template, a "casual" or "speed lettering" alphabet. We will work on animated characters, with a predominantly American style that we can see in many examples of traditional film signs, spots, etc, from the 1920s.
Materials
- Square and bevel, transparent and unnumbered
- Pencil, eraser and pencil sharpener
- Dusting rags
Professor: Xano Armenter
Dates: 27 July
Scheduled time: from 3 pm to 7 pm
Duration: 4h
Drawing and painting session with an iPad, where we will look at the various apps available and the potential for creating digital artwork. Through various exercises we will learn how to use and analyse in depth the Procreate and Fresco applications.
